Australia – World Cup Preview

The Socceroos head to a successive World Cup on the back of a confident qualifying campaign. They finished top of their Asian group going unbeaten in the final group stage, ending above Japan. The move from the Oceania region to Asia was a bold one but the Australians have proven themselves capable of handling the opposition.

Recently, friendly results haven’t gone entirely their way and it’s possible this could dampen some of Australia’s buoyancy. The squad is a decent one though, and if things start to pick up again for the Aussies they could be dangerous.

Tactics come from Pim Verbeek who replaced countryman Gus Hiddink back in 2007. Australia’s playing style under him has become more defensive than under his predecessor, Verbeek prefers a 4-2-3-1 line up. Some fans are unhappy with this system and it does seem a little negative, it also rather hinges on the fitness of Harry Kewell and a striker to replace the now retired Mark Viduka.

Viduka led the charge back in 2006 and what Australia really needs now is a goalscorer to replace him in Verbeek’s system. Goals will no doubt come from Tim Cahill, the Socceroo talisman who has netted 20 goals in 40 games and Brett Emerton may get a few depending on his position.

Richard Garcia of Hull City could be an effective right winger if given the nod whilst Mark Bresciano of Palermo may act as play-maker and Garcia’s opposite in midfield.

At the back Lucas Neill should provide some efficient defensive support and will probably take the captain’s armband. In goal Mark Schwarzer will likely be as reliable as ever. Australia’s Group D includes Germany, Serbia and Ghana and they will need to find a stronger goal threat if they truly want to proceed.
