So our domestic season is over – to be fair it’s been one full of twists and turns but in all fairness I believe Chelsea have to be deemed worthy winners of the Premier League. The way I see it they did the double over United, Arsenal and Liverpool, scored the most goals and lost the least games. So there can be no complaints in my eyes.
Looking at Chelsea’s rivals, United ran them closest, yet to be fair played poorly in comparison to last season – that said it’s testimony to them they took it to the last game. No doubt Sir Alex Ferguson has noted they have fell behind and will be plotting a new assault.
Arsenal simply never had the squad and will look to add players this year; surely they will sign a striker and a centre-back. Their priority will be to keep hold of Cesc Fabregas.
Liverpool literally stunk and have to be the season’s disappointment considering pre-season they were quoted at 7/2 for the title. One way or another there will be changes at Anfield.
Tottenham ended up breaking into the top four; Aston Villa did well with limited resources while Everton’s second half of the season was outstanding.
Looking back at the season a few of us in Betfred Towers have been ‘discussing’ who should be the manager of the year. I personally go for Fulham’s Roy Hodgson, who when taking over just two seasons ago on the brink of near certain relegation. They escaped and he has now guided them to the Europa League final.
The run they have had has been nothing short of remarkable – hopefully they will win the final in Hamburg against Atletico Madrid, as it’s safe to say they have done it the hard way getting past Shaktar Donetsk, Juventus and Hamburg en route.
A few of the lads go for Alex McLeish for guiding Birmingham to a top-half finish despite being odds on for the drop at the start of the season. Granted a more than fair effort, but it has to be Hodgson for me. Surprisingly no one voted for a certain Mr Benitez.
Looking forward to the Champions League final well I want Inter to win, just so Jose Mourinho can send Roman Abramovich a simple ‘Bullseye’ style text message – going along the lines of ‘Here’s what you could have won’.
Imagine the response that would get!
The FA Cup final is a true David v Goliath encounter with poor old Portsmouth facing the might of Chelsea. In fairness I have said since the fourth round that Portsmouth would lift the cup and got a load of ridicule in the office. But much to the annoyance of the lads, they keep getting through. After the season they have had I guess most neutrals would like them to lift the cup now, unfortunately Chelsea may be one shock too many – but you never know!
Fulham to lift the Europa League 5/4
Inter to lift the Champions League 4/7
Portsmouth to lift the FA Cup 9/2
