Cheltenham Festival frolics upon us

It’s the greatest show on Turf and at 1.30 on Tuesday the wait is finally over.

Bumper winner Dunguib, currently unbeaten when completing the course, has yet to impress everyone with his jumping, his chances are obvious but it is reflected in the odds as a short-price favourite.

Unbeaten Get Me Out of Here, winner of the Gold Trophy at Newbury, is the obvious danger and this horse has improved all season and could be anything. Oscar Whiskey and General Miller from the Nicky Henderson stable are attracting each-way interest.

In the Arkle Captain Cee Bee is lightly raced but strongly fancied to beat his eleven rivals, while Best Mate’s trainer Henrietta Knight has a live contender in Somersby, while at a price former Champion Hurdle runner-up Osana can run well for the Irish.

One of the most competitive Handicap Chases of the season is at 2.40 where you could easily pick a dozen of the 24 runners and miss the winner. I like the chances of the huge horse Theatrical Moment who appears to have taken to chasing far more than hurdling, while David Pipe’s The Package is well weighted and has a touch of class.

Unlike the opener at 1.30 there will certainly be no short prices here in one of the most competitive renewals I can remember.

At 3.20 12 go to post in the Champion Hurdle with nine of these 12 all believing they have an outstanding chance of being the Champion Hurdler of 2010 by 3.30 Tuesday afternoon. The intriguing runner is number one Binocular, beaten favourite by stable companion and 22/1 outsider Punjabi 12 months ago, who also takes his chance under Barry Geraghty who steered him up the hill a year ago.

Zaynar, winner of the Triumph Hurdle 12 months ago is a great chance ride for Andrew Tinkler and if he had not been beaten at odds of 1/14 at Kelso on his latest start he would be considerably shorter in the betting.

Go Native has an extra incentive to win as he is chasing a one million pound bonus for his connections, while Medermit, Khyber Kim and Celestial Halo are all strong each-way fancies.

Garde Champetre will be hard to beat in the Cross Country at 4 o’clock with Silver Birch a previous Grand National winner a decent alternative to the favourite.

The opening day’s action concludes with the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle, with the Irish dominating the betting with last year’s winning favourite Quevega been challenged for favouritism this time round by Voler La Bedette.

Tuesday’s Best Bet – Garde Champetre
