Rangers aiming for famous repeat

icehockeygenerallargeThe New York Rangers have insisted that they can take plenty of positives from Wednesday night’s defeat to the New Jersey Devils into Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Friday night at the Prudential Center, with their play-off lives very much on the line (Devils 4/11, Rangers 11/5 Eastern Conference Outright).

The Rangers dominated for most of Game 5 but surrendered an early 3-0 advantage to their cross-river rivals at Madison Square Garden, but after fighting back to tie at 3-3 in the third period Ryan Carter and Zach Parise scored in the last five minutes to seal a 5-3 win for the Devils.

However, the Rangers are confident that they can repeat much of what was good about their game when it matters in Game 6, despite the fact they are staring elimination in the face.

“We know we can do those things. That’s what we’ve done all year,” Rangers center Brian Boyle said. “We have confidence as a group. We don’t need to say, ‘Oh, we did some good things,’ a moral victory to give ourselves confidence.

“We know we can do some things with the puck. We can forecheck and create offense that way. As the game wore on we did a better job of that.”

The Rangers have already been in this position in the play-offs, having won the final two games against Ottawa in the first round, with Game 6 on the road, to win 4-3, while they also edged out Washington in a deciding Game 7.

There is also some history in this particular rivalry with Mark Messier famously guaranteeing a Game 6 win to force a decider against the Devils in the Eastern Conference Finals way back in 1994, with the Rangers going on to lift the Stanley Cup (Rangers 11/2 Stanley Cup Outright).
