Nets star could miss start of season

The Brooklyn Nets could be without star man Deron Williams for the start of the season, head coach Jason Kidd has revealed (Brooklyn Nets 10/1 – NBA Championship 2013/14 outright).

The point guard has missed a number of pre-season games with an ankle problem and the 29-year-old is in danger of sitting out several weeks of the season as a result.

“This is going to be a question that we’re probably going to have to deal with every day until he does get the green light to go,” Kidd, who is preparing for his first year in charge, told ESPN.

“But we’re not rushing him. So if we have to start the season with him still trying to get better, I think we all feel comfortable, but we would feel a little bit more comfortable if he was starting.”

If Williams does miss out it will be a big blow to the Nets, who have been tipped as potential Championship contenders after some big-name arrivals in the off-season.

Brooklyn have brought in veterans Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry from Boston Celtics ahead of the 2013/14 campaign as they seek to build on last season’s first-round play-off exit.

Three-time NBA All-Star Williams is set to be one of the Nets’ key players in the season ahead but it looks as if he is set to miss the opening fixture against Cleveland Cavaliers on October 30 and potentially the games against Miami, Orland and the Utah Jazz.

Miami Heat are the 2/1 favourites to secure the Championship ahead of the new NBA season, the Chicago Bulls are 12/1 while last season’s beaten finalists, the San Antonio Spurs, can be backed at 10/1.
