Wade cautious over fitness

Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade doesn’t know if he will feature against San Antonio Spurs on Sunday as he is keen to manage his fitness for the end-of-season play-offs (Miami Heat 2/1 – NBA Championship Outright).

Wade has missed the last four games with a knee problem and admits he may sit out again against the Spurs, who Miami defeated in the finals last term.

If the Heat are to defend the Championship and land an historic ‘three-peat’ Wade’s fitness and availability could be key.

LeBron James may be the Heat’s star but Wade’s contribution to their 2013 success should not be underestimated and the 32-year-old has indicated he is only missing the regular season games in order to ensure he is ready for the play-offs.

“The play-offs are different,” said Wade is quoted as saying by the Miami Herald. “If this was the play-offs, I wouldn’t have been out.”

The guard revealed swelling was no longer an issue but he is still being troubled by pain in his knee, with Wade unsure as to what is causing the problem.

He has been working on strengthening his legs and knees and remains confident he will be available for the play-offs.

He added: “I’m mentally strong, so mentally you never have to worry about me.

“I deal with that behind closed doors, mentally. Obviously it’s physical, but there is a big mental part of it, but I continue to keep grinding and continue to keep working until I feel like I can do what my body lets me do. That’s all I can do.”

Miami are 8/15 in the match betting to see off the visiting Spurs on Sunday, San Antonio are 6/4 and the Heat can be backed at 10/11 with a -4 handicap in the points spread.
