Kings taking one game at a time

Los Angeles Kings secured an early advantage in the Stanley Cup Finals series against New Jersey Devils (Kings 2/7, Devils 11/4 Outright Winner) on Wednesday but will not rest on their laurels and are determined to double it up on Saturday night.

The Kings have enjoyed a fantastic run in the play-offs and surprised many with the relative ease with which they dispatched seeds one, two and three to win the Western Conference championship.

Darryl Sutter’s men qualified for the play-offs as eighth seed which has made their run all the more remarkable as they have had to begin each round on the road.

It was the same again in the Stanley Cup Finals but the Kings came up trumps at Prudential Center to stretch an unbeaten road streak to 9-0, with the team determined to continue that on Saturday night in Game 2 (Devils 10/11, Kings 10/11 Match Outright).

Defenseman Drew Doughty: “I think it has already kind of worn off. Even though that was a big win, we have to go into the next one as if the series is starting all over again — like it is 0-0 and we’ve got to get that first win on the road.

“I know guys are thinking that way and Darryl [Sutter] is going to be preaching that to us.”

Perhaps worryingly for the Devils is the way the Kings have seemingly improved their Game 2 performances in the play-offs to date.

Dustin Brown scored two short-handed goals en-route to a 4-2 victory in Vancouver, St Louis found themselves 4-0 down after the first period while Jeff Carter bagged a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Phoenix.
