Upson eyes Capello boost

England defender Matthew Upson hopes coach Fabio Capello’s approach towards “confidence, belief and discipline” will translate into World Cup glory this summer (England 11/2 Outright).

The Italian led the Three Lions to a near-faultless qualification campaign for South Africa 2010 as England bounced back from their failure to reach Euro 2008.

Upson, who is waiting in the wings should either captain Rio Ferdinand or John Terry suffer injury or suspension problems this summer, says Capello is a hugely respected figure in the dressing room which bodes well for the team.

“He likes to see players work hard; he likes to see you play with confidence, belief and with discipline and that’s the key thing he has brought to the team,” Upson told the BBC.

The West Ham central defender added: “I’m not just talking about behaviour, I’m talking about tactically out on the pitch and I think that’s a trademark of his management.

“His winning capabilities have been shown in the past and it would be great to see those capabilities at international level for England.”

England face USA, Algeria and Slovenia in Group C (5/1 Winning Group), kicking off against the Americans on June 12.
