Season taking toll on Williams

Serena Williams (5/4 Australian Open outright) had to dig deep to secure victory over Jelena Jankovic at the WTA Championships in Istanbul as she admitted she was suffering from fatigue as she looks ahead to her final encounter with Li Na.

Williams broke down after five games of her semi-final meeting with the world number eight and had to take a few moments to regain composure and return to the court.

The 32-year-old recovered well and went on to win the next 10 points, taking the lead on her way to collecting the victory 6-4 2-6 6-4.

The American will now take on China’s Li Na (Williams 1/5, Na 10/3 Match Betting) on Sunday but she admits that the busy schedule this season has taken its toll on her body.

Williams is seeking her 11th title of the year and is still on course to confirm her spot as the greatest female tennis player of all time as she is just five Grand Slams short of Steffi Graf’s record total of 22 individual titles.

Williams said: “I was just physically really tired.

“My legs wouldn’t move. My arm wouldn’t go fast. I think when you are doing something so much for so long throughout the year, maybe it can take its toll.”
