Williams “excited” by US Open start

World number one and 4/6 tournament favourite Serena Williams has revealed her delight after picking up a convincing straight-sets triumph against Francesca Schiavone in the first round of the US Open.

Williams was handed a tough test as she started the defence of her crown against the former French Open champion.

However, the American demonstrated why she sits at the top of the world rankings after giving up just one game and easing into the second round with a 6-0 6-1 victory.

The 31-year-old will now take on world number 82 Galina Voskoboeva (Match Betting – Williams 1/100, Voskoboeva 20/1) as she aims to continue building momentum at Flushing Meadows.

Williams said: “I’m really excited. I knew playing a former Grand Slam champion in the first round was a tough draw so I just tried to be super serious.

“In this sport you never know what can happen. That’s why you have to enjoy every moment, enjoy every win.”

Serena’s sister, Venus also booked her place in the second round by winning 6-1 6-2 against 12th seed Kirsten Flipkens.

Williams added: “I definitely was happy to see Venus win. I really was happy for her. I know she’s been working hard. I know she had a tough opponent.

“For her to come through was just awesome. Obviously, I want to do well, too.”
