Serena fit to defend US crown

Serena WilliamsWorld number one Serena Williams has confirmed that she is has shaken off the virus which scuppered her Wimbledon hopes and will defend her US Open crown (9/4 Tournament Outright) from August 25.

The 32-year-old American endured a disappointing tournament at SW19 last month when she crashed out at the third round stage against France’s Alize Cornet.

Williams was then forced to retire from her doubles game with sister Venus at the All England Club after requiring medical assistance on the court when she was struggling to serve because of vision problems.

The virus then left her unable to feature at the Swedish Open earlier this month, but Williams has now revealed that she will return at the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford University on Wednesday.

The hope is she will come through that unscathed and then find her sharpness in time for the US Open at Flushing Meadows in a month’s time.

Williams said: “I feel very good. I feel very happy to be here, so it’s good.”
