Kvitova makes New Haven final

Petra Kvitova (8/11 – New Haven Open outright) showed her class as she stormed into the final of the New Haven Open where she will take on Simona Halep.

The defending champion has struggled to find her feet all season but she showed form of old to breeze past Fed Cup team-mate Klara Zakopalova 6-0 6-1 inside just 50 minutes.

Kvitova (7/4 to win 2-0 in the final) had previously struggled in her earlier matches in the tournament but she got the ideal preparation heading into the US Open by finishing the match in two sets.

Kvitova said: “I think the beginning of the match was pretty close. Klara had chances to win the first game and the next game when she was serving. I think that was the turning point.

“I was saying to myself, I need to stay focused in the first set and play really well because I know she can come back anytime and I need to be ready for it.”

The former Wimbledon winner will meet Halep in the final after she knocked out fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 7-5.

The Romanian is on a good run and has won three of her last six tournaments as she tries to maintain her form for the US Open, where she will play Heather Watson in the first round.
