Fresh Soderling fizzes into semis

Tennis player, Robin Soderling, celebrates after winning a pointRobin Soderling (13/2 in ATP World Tour Finals Outright odds) may be the freshest of the elite eight players in London this week and he looked it after all but clinching a semi-final berth at the ATP Tour finals in comprehensive fashion.

The Swedish number one, who has been tipped to win a major in 2010 by compatriot and former French Open winner Mats Wilander, ground out the first set on a tie-break before breaking opponent Novak Djokovic’s resistence spectacularly in the second.

The Serbian star (Djokovic 7/2) looked like he hit a brick wall after losing the opener and collapsed to a 6-7,1-6 loss – just two days after scraping through a three-hour marathon with Nikolay Davydenko (18/1).

Soderling was delighted with his first ever win over the world number three and said: “I feel pretty good right now. I played a great match – I didn’t start perfectly but I served well. After 7 or 8 games I played better – the second set was just great.”

Djokovic’s fatigue was plain to see for the London crowd and he will have a hard job to pick himself up for his final Group B round-robin match against Rafael Nadal – which will be his 97th match on tour this season.

Soderling, with two wins, is virtually home and dry for the last four by virtue of his positive games win-loss record which stands at plus ten.
