Wolves raring to go

The Wolves won the league leaders’ shield last term as they romped to a series of huge 50-point plus wins and topped 1,000 points in the regular season (Warrington 15/8 Regular Season Outright).

Smith admits he hopes for more “healthy competition” this year and more closer games, as they can help his players develop as they have to “turn up” week on week throughout the Super League.

Warrington have just arrived back from a three-week training camp in Australia that was not without incident, as they lost second rower David Solomona with a broken leg. However, there was a boost with scrum-half Richie Myler returning ahead of schedule.

The coach predicts all the travelling will not detrimentally affect his players by the time they run out at the KC Stadium on Sunday.

“We’ve got plenty of time to be back on track,” Smith said. “We trained today and everybody was pretty much on song.

“They felt good and were pretty sharp in training. We didn’t drop a ball so that tells you where we’re at.”

The first Super League games of the season take place on Friday night with Leeds Rhinos playing Hull KR (Leeds 1/5, draw 20/1, Hull 100/30) and new-boys Widnes Vikings taking on Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at the Stobart Stadium.
