Four Nations hopefuls England (6/4 in Betfred’s outright market) will be without Sean O’Loughlin for the tournament, after x-rays revealed he has cracked a bone in his thumb.
The Wigan captain has endured bad luck with injuries at international level in the past, sitting out last year’s World Cup with a shoulder problem.
Although O’Loughlin normally plays as a loose forward for his club, he was due to be used by his country on the wing and has now been replaced by Hull FC’s Tom Briscoe.
Coach Tony Smith admits O’Loughlin’s absence is a blow, but he feels England have the strength in depth to cope with his withdrawal.
Smith said: “We feel for Sean but this is a great opportunity for Tom. I’m sure he’s going to make a very positive contribution to our Four Nations plans.”
England start their Four Nations campaign against France, the 50-1 outsiders for the title, at the Keepmoat Stadium on Friday night.
