Tomkins excited for Saints showdown

Rugby League - First Utility Super League - Play Off - Wigan Warriors v Warrington Wolves - DW Stadium
Wigan Warriors (2/5 – To win the Grand Final) centre Joel Tomkins says that a Grand Final win over fierce rivals St Helens on Saturday would be “amazing”.

The 27-year-old, who returned from a stint playing rugby union for Saracens in June, crossed over for one of the Cherry and Whites’ tries against Warrington last week and is now looking to do the same when the defending champions meet St Helens.

The Grand Final is the highlight and culmination of the Super League season, with Saints hoping to claim their fifth title since the first such game was played at Old Trafford back in 1998, while Wigan are aiming for their fourth.

He said: “It’s fantastic to be back, it does feel like I’m home now. It would be amazing if we got the win on Saturday to top it off.”

The Warriors are playing in their second successive Grand Final and will be keen to repeat their heroics of last year, when they sealed a 30-16 victory over Warrington.

Tomkins says that he his side are looking forward to the prospect of facing their local rivals at the home of Manchester United and knows it will be a big occasion, with a crowd in excess of 65,000 expected.

“There is a real local feel to the game this year which will make it an even bigger spectacle and a real old-fashioned Wigan-Saints derby,” he added.

“I don’t think it’s really a hatred, it’s just a competitiveness with the two towns being so close.”
