Saints happy with underdog label

Super League Grand FinalSt Helens boss Nathan Brown believes his team will benefit from a lack of pressure after being labelled as the underdogs for Saturday’s Super League Grand Final against Wigan (St Helens 2/1, draw 20/1, Wigan 2/5 – Match Betting).

Saints (6/4 to be winning at half-time) won the 2014 League Leaders’ Shield and booked their place in the Grand Final with a dominant 30-12 victory over Catalan Dragons.

Brown’s men also won the most recent derby with Wigan (4/11 – To Lift Trophy) when they triumphed 16-12 at the DW Stadium in June, but are considered to have only an outside chance of success this weekend.

The Saints boss says they do not need to be backed by anyone other than themselves and believes being unfancied will suit his players going into the Old Trafford showdown.

“No one is tipping us; there isn’t a soul that is backing us,” Brown told Saints’ official website.

“From a pressure point of view there isn’t any on us as no-one is expecting us to win. A few weeks ago Wigan would have rubbed their hands at playing us in a Grand Final.

“Well, this squad didn’t believe what people were saying and now we are here. We will be giving it our best shot. We are tipping ourselves.”

Brown believes whichever team wins the forward battle will be crowned champions and admits beating Shaun Wane’s side earlier this year has given his players a confidence boost.

“The win at Wigan was really important for us,” he added. “The first time we faced them we didn’t stand up physically but the second time we did.

“The forward battle will determine the result on Saturday. We know they are coming and we will need to be up for it physically too. I’d be surprised if both sides aren’t up for the collision and whoever wins those battles will determine who wins on the day.”
