Wane calls for response

Shaun Wane 3677249Wigan Warriors (9/4 Grand Final winner) head coach Shaun Wane has urged his squad to show some kind of a response in their next outing after falling to defeat at the hands of already-relegated Bradford Bulls on Sunday.

Wane’s side had the opportunity to keep within touching distance of league leaders St Helens but they now sit third, four points shy of top spot.

The reigning champions demolished Bradford 84-6 earlier in the season but failed to show that kind of quality in the return match in Odsal on Sunday.

Bradford, who have already had their fate sealed and will be playing second tier rugby next term, claimed a 16-8 victory to take their tally to five wins for the season.

The 49-year-old admitted that he spent the night following the game analysing where his squad went wrong and doing everything possible to ensure it doesn’t happen again at this crucial point of the term.

Wigan take on Salford Red Devils on Thursday (match betting – 1/3 Wigan, 25/1 draw, 9/4 Salford) and the Lancastrian is eager to see a bounce from his men in the final few games.

Wane said: “I didn’t sleep last night, I watched the game four times and did the review.

“I’ve spoken with the players this morning and been quite honest with the players.

“The players have been honest with me back. They understand where we need to improve and make sure the mentality we had on Sunday never comes back.

“We’ve shown that we can play. We went with our attitude not bang on. It’s disappointing. We had the chance to win the game and we didn’t close it out.”
