Lunt targets Saints’ scalp

Rugby League - First Utility Super League - Wigan Warriors v Huddersfield Giants - DW StadiumShaun Lunt feels Huddersfield Giants can defeat Super League Leaders Shield hopefuls St Helens (1/4 Regular Season Outright) on Friday night, despite their struggle to edge past Hull FC 38-28 on Sunday.

The 27-year-old hooker spoke out following the side’s lacklustre display at the John Smith’s Stadium and warned his team-mates that any repeat against the Saints on home soil at the end of the week could cost them a top-four finish.

Lunt, who has battled back from lengthy lay-offs with respective ankle and calf issues this season, is adamant that he is “in the best possible shape to give the Giants everything” as they target Grand Final success (7/1 Winner).

And his immediate aim is to ensure the Giants’ play-off hopes are enhanced by finishing in the top four at the end of the regular campaign.

Lunt told the Examiner: “I don’t think we should take too much away from Hull, because they came to us and gave it their best shot. But, at the same time, there’s no doubt we were nowhere near our best and nearly paid a very high price for that.

“Too many of us were off it yesterday, and I definitely include myself in that.

“The key is to make sure there’s no repeat against Saints on Friday night, and I’m 100% confident that’ll be the case.

“Our record against the teams in the top six this season have been good, and if we beat St Helens we’ll have beaten them all during the course of the year.

“I know Saints will be fired-up because they’ve got the League Leaders Shield to play for, but this is our game, at our home and our chance to guarantee a top-four finish. Friday night is all about us.”
