Smith predicts play-off classic

Tony Smith 20018240Warrington coach Tony Smith believes his side’s semi-final clash at Wigan Warriors on Friday could prove to be a “classic” encounter (Wigan 4/9, draw 20/1, Warrington 15/8 – Super League matches).

The Warriors have won both meetings between the two sides this season and they just edged the last fixture 24-20 when the Wire travelled to the DW Stadium in September.

Smith expects another close encounter in their semi-final clash on Friday, but he hopes his side can come out on top.

“It’s got the makings of a real classic,” he told the BBC. “The Wigan-Warrington match-ups for the last few four or five years have been some of the best matches of the whole entire Super League seasons – they stand out.

“It’s a match-up worthy of a final.”

Wigan secured a 30-16 victory over Warrington in the 2013 Grand Final as they fought back in the second-half to claim the top prize.

Smith believes the two sides contrasting styles will add to the spectacle on Friday and he has predicted a pulsating encounter.

The Australian added: “There is a contrast in the way each team plays – we’re a little bit more ad lib and less structured than Wigan.

“When people say structures, they think boring, but they’re not at all boring. They stick to what they do and they do it regularly and do it well, but that doesn’t mean they don’t pass the ball, and they’re entertaining.

“You know what is coming and it’s just whether you’re good enough to stop it.”

Warrington welcome back full-back Matty Russell for the trip to Wigan after he missed the win over Castleford last week, but Simon Grix and Ben Westwood remain sidelined.

Wigan have no fresh injury concerns after their win over Huddersfield but prop Scott Taylor replaces Gil Dudson in the only change to the squad that saw off the Giants.

Warrington winger Joel Monaghan is 7/1 to score the first try of the game, while Wigan’s Blake Green is available at 18/1.
