Briscoe hoping to go one better

Tom BriscoeLeeds Rhinos winger Tom Briscoe is hoping to put last year’s Challenge Cup final heartache behind him and lift the trophy this weekend should his side beat Castleford Tigers (Rhinos 4/9, draw 20/1, Castleford 15/8 – match betting).

The two Yorkshire clubs will travel to Wembley on Saturday to try and lift the famous trophy with both clubs under plenty of pressure to deliver.

The Tigers have done brilliantly well to reach the final but they will be desperate to win with many of their current squad moving on to pastures new at the end of the campaign. On the other hand, the Rhinos have failed to win the competition since 1999 and have tasted defeat on numerous occasions.

Briscoe (9/1 to score the first try) knows that feeling well after losing to Wigan Warriors last season when he played for Hull FC.

He admits the Wembley occasion can overawe some players and he is hoping to enjoy the trip to the capital this weekend.

“It’s not the same as other games no,” he told Sky Sports. “Obviously finals rarely come about and I think that through my experiences through the Challenge Cup and throughout my career it’s one that you’ve really got to savour and make the most of the week.

“Going back to 2008 when I first played at Wembley it was all quite sudden and I didn’t really take it all in. I suppose I might have thought that it would just happen to me every few years, so last season when I played there I treated it differently and just tried to enjoy the whole experience.

“Little things like getting to train at Wembley for the final run, when you first get there I don’t think you really grasp what you are doing and really take it all in.

“Then you look back and think I didn’t really enjoy it as much as I should have done. So last year I made a conscious effort to do that and it will be the same this time.”
