North relishing European test

George NorthGeorge North admits he cannot wait to start playing in the European Champions Cup with Northampton Saints (6/1 Tournament Outright) and is hoping to join a group of elite Welsh sportspeople by winning it.

Saints (6/4 to win Pool 5) get their European campaign off and running next Saturday when they travel to Racing Metro (6/4).

The Premiership champions will be heading to Paris for the first time in a competitive European tournament and while North is aware the team will be under pressure, he is relishing the chance to play in Europe.

“I’m very excited about this tournament because you want to play at the highest level,” North told WalesOnline. “There’s massive pressure in Europe and you have to be on your game every week.

“You have to make sure your own house is in order no matter whether you’re playing home or away ready for the battle.”

North, at the age of 22, has a chance to become only the tenth Welshman in history to lift the trophy and he already has his eyes on the prize.

“Let’s hope so, it would be great to join that list” he added. “It would be massive to win the European Cup. I felt privileged to have helped Saints win the Premiership last season.

“To get a European title on top of that would be great for my repertoire and the club.”

Saints (5/2 Premiership Grand Final Winner) travel to the French capital on the back of four straight Premiership wins after a dominant 43-10 victory over Sale on Saturday.

Racing Metro have meanwhile won five of their nine games at the start of the Top 14 season but lost 23-19 at Stade Francais this weekend.
