Ashton desperate for another England chance

Chris Ashton hopes his performances for Saracens will earn him an England recall for the summer tour of New Zealand (Saracens 5/1 – Heineken Cup outright).

Ashton was omitted from the Six Nations squad and hasn’t featured for England since November but he is confident he can force his way back into coach Stuart Lancaster’s plans.

The winger has played a starring role in Saracens’ march to the semi-finals of the Heineken Cup with nine tries in the competition and he feels his performances at club level can see recalled to the national side.

“I’m a great believer in everything happening for a reason,” Ashton told BBC Radio 5 live.

“I’ve got a couple of games left this season to put my hand up, and get back involved in New Zealand.”

Ashton has managed 37 appearances for England to date and he feels optimistic on his chances of getting back into the team, although he is well aware there is fierce competition for places in Lancaster’s squad.

He added: “Last time I spoke to Stuart, he said it’s in my hands to get involved (again). New Zealand’s going to be a tough tour, and you want to be involved in that in the build up to the World Cup (in 2015). I’m enjoying rugby again.

“I’m only 27, I’d like to think I’m heading in to my prime and I’ve got a lot to offer still.

“Wing is a position where there are always new and up-and-coming players coming through. But the great players – like (retired Ireland centre) Brian O’Driscoll – always manage to stay in the team and on top of their game.”

England can be backed at 15/8 to win the 2015 Six Nations and 11/2 to win the World Cup next year.
