Avoid French fancy, warns Davies

Former Wales star Jonathan Davies has warned Cardiff Blues winger Alex Cuthbert that a big-money move to France might not be the best option at this stage of his career (7/4 Wales – RBS 6 Nations 2013 outright).

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a fine season in the RaboDirect Pro12 with the Blues and helped Wales (6/1 World Cup 2015 outright) secure the Grand Slam title at this year’s RBS 6 Nations Championship.

Cuthbert’s performances have not gone unnoticed and the talented youngster has been linked with a move across the Channel to the Top14 competition next season.

Both Toulon and Racing Metro have been linked with the Welsh winger but former stand-off Davies believes Cuthbert should continue his development with the Blues over a big money deal in France.

Davies told Scrum V: “It’s not always the money which is best. And I feel that if they develop him in France, fair enough, and look at his defensive qualities and they persevere with him and educate him, that’s great.

“But in Cardiff, if he stays in Wales with the Welsh coaches and now with Phil [Davies], it’s a question of, right, we’ve got to work on his defensive capabilities because the last thing he wants is to go to France and lose his confidence and then lose his [Wales] place.”
