McCall’s hails Sarries resilience

McCall 12837713Saracens (9/1 European Champions Cup outright) director of rugby Mark McCall was quick to praise his team after their 28-21 win over Gloucester on Saturday.

Sarries’ (6/4 to win Pool 1 European Champions Cup outright) Brad Barritt was the star of the show as the England centre returned to the first-team after recovering from his calf injury.

McCall’s side tasted defeat for the first time this season last weekend against Bath and they responded in the best possible manner.

Gloucester’s Rob Cook scored early but Sarries responded with tries through Chris Wyles, Alistair Hargreaves and Chris Aston.

The win ensured Saracens moved up to second in the table and McCall was quick to praise his troops after they bounced back after conceding early in the contest.

“We were 13-3 down, and they came out of the blocks pretty well. We showed a bit of resilience, a bit of resolve to get ourselves back into the game. Some of rugby after that period was a little better,” he told the club’s official site.

“I thought we bounced back really well. Gloucester worked unbelievably hard, and I don’t think we saw that kind of fight from them last year. It was an unbelievably physical game, so we are very happy to have come away with the win.

“We’re pleased that we are where we are in the league, and now we can switch our attention to Europe.”

Speaking after the win, Wyles was quick to echo McCall’s comments and he insists the win was huge going into the tough tie against Clermont next weekend.

He said: “The boys were a bit frustrated to not get the bonus point at the end, but overall we’re happy to get the victory especially going into a huge game against Clermont next week.”
