Briscoe bullish on final chances

In-form winger Tom Briscoe has admitted that England need to improve to upset the odds in the Four Nations final at Elland Road on Saturday but insists that the players are confident they can beat Australia (England 100/30, draw 20/1, Australia 2/9 – Match Betting).

Steve McNamara’s men go into the contest on the back of an impressive performance against New Zealand and a huge 28-6 scoreline, which will give the home side confidence of avenging the earlier defeat to the Kangaroos.

Australia ran out 36-20 winners at Wembley two weeks ago although the betting suggests it will be a much closer affair this weekend, with both sides available at 10/11 on the handicap with England having a 12-point start.

Briscoe (10/1 – First Tryscorer) is fully aware that he and his team-mates need to step up further but is confident England can rise to the occasion.

“As a team, we’re performing pretty well and I think we can take a lot of confidence out of that performance at the weekend,” Briscoe said.

“Hopefully we take it into this week and get a win. We know we’ve still got to improve a lot to win this game but we think we’re capable of doing that with the squad we’ve got.

“In big games you need to step up and in finals you need to go to that special place where maybe you haven’t been before. We’ve been improving steadily and that’s been the main aim.”
