Argentina are bridging the gap

argentina-rugby-celebrateArgentina sealed their first ever Rugby Championship win on Sunday, after defeating Australia 21-17, and in doing so lay down a marker for next year’s World Cup (Argentina 66/1 to win World Cup).

The Pumas finally completed their first victory in the tournament at the eighteenth attempt in what has been an impressive campaign for the South Americans. The gap between themselves and the more dominant southern hemisphere sides appears to be closing rapidly ahead of next year’s World Cup in England.

The Argentine’s head coach Daniel Hourcade believes the win had been coming, saying: “We were desperately seeking the win and had come close in three matches.”

Despite the victory, the Pumas still finished bottom of the four-team tournament with reigning World Champions New Zealand winning the competition.

They are once again favourites to retain the World Cup next Autumn (New Zealand 11/8 to win).

South Africa (7/2) and Australia (9/1) finished second and third respectively in the tournament and are among the All Blacks’ main rivals for glory at England 2015.
