Real relent in Ronaldo tug-of-war

The FIFA World Player of the Year has been named in Portugal’s squad for their two-legged World Cup play-off against Bosnia Herzegovina (11/2 in Match Betting, Draw 10/3 with Betfred), but Real claim he is not fit to play because of an ankle injury.

But after 48 hours of wrangling and much speculation in the Iberian media, the Bernabeu club posted this statement on their official website: “Cristiano Ronaldo will travel to Portugal in the next few hours. He will put himself at the disposal of the medical services of the Portuguese football federation.”

Ronaldo picked up the injury playing against Marseille in the Champions League and appeared to aggravate it when he was forced to come off early in Portugal’s must-win qualifier against Hungary a month ago.

He has not played for his club since and the Madrid hierarchy and fans are growing increasingly worried about the fitness of their world record £80million investment in a season where they are attempting to break the dominance of rivals Barcelona and win the Champions League for a tenth time – bit this time on home turf.
