Fourteen-time world champion Phil Taylor admitted he was beaten ‘fair and square’ after he suffered a shock 5-1 defeat to Vincent van der Voort at the Grand Slam of Darts on Tuesday night.
‘The Power’ remains the favourite to take the title, currently available at 4/11, ahead of Gary Anderson and James Wade both at 9/1, and Raymond van Barneveld at 12/1.
Taylor admitted he lacked the proper motivation for the clash, having already booked his progress, and had no complaints about being beaten by the man who suffered the embarrassing defeat to Anastasia Dobromyslova on Sunday.
“I didn’t want to lose but he beat me fair and square,” Taylor admitted. “It was hard for me to get up for the match because I was already through and it’s a bad day at the office, but I’ll be back on the practice board on Wednesday and will be ready for the second round on Thursday.”
Taylor will now take on Colin Lloyd in the second round on Thursday after the latter was made to sweat until the final leg of the evening.
‘Jaws’ lost his final group match to Tony O’Shea 5-2 and needed Brian Woods to beat Colin Osbourne to make it through. When Osbourne took a 4-1 lead, Lloyd must have thought his tournament was over, but Woods reeled off four legs on the bounce to seal the win.
The others to make it through were van Barneveld and Kevin Painter from Group D, Kirk Shepherd and Mervyn King from Group C, Mark Webster from Group A and O’Shea from Group B.
