Whitmarsh excited by US test

McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, is looking forward to seeing Lewis Hamilton (5/2 US GP outright) and Jenson Button in action on the Circuit of the Americas at the 2012 US Grand Prix.

Having gone five years without a race in the US, the sport is finally making a return with the meeting this weekend taking place in Austin, Texas.

Whitmarsh is a big supporter of having a race in the United States and believes it should become a permanent fixture on the Formula One circuit.

He said: “I’ve always maintained that Formula 1’s presence in the United States is crucial, so I’m personally pleased and satisfied that we’re finally returning to America after spending far too long away from its shores.

“On a wider level, the arrival of a state-of-the-art, purpose-built grand prix track is perfect for Formula 1, and this is a golden opportunity for the sport to finally put down roots and find a long-term home.”

In the race for the world drivers’ championship, frontrunner Sebastian Vettel (6/4 2012 world drivers’ championship outright) of Red Bull has just 10 points between himself and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso with two races of the 2012 campaign remaining.
