Sebastian Vettel (4/6 Abu Dhabi GP outright) has continued his domination in Formula One this season as he secured pole position ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.
The German managed to hold off a strong challenge from McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton (3/1 Abu Dhabi outright) to record the fastest lap of the day, while Jenson Button finished in third place in the rankings.
In sealing his place on pole, Vettel has now equalled the record set by Nigel Mansell in 1992 with 14 pole positions in a season and is the favourite to go on and win the race in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
The 24-year-old admitted he had to dig deep to take his 29th pole position of his relatively short career, with Hamilton pushing him all the way.
He said: “Lewis looked very strong all weekend so it was good that we were able to be that little bit quicker than him.
“I wasn’t happy with the car (on Friday). This place is tricky in many ways. It’s not easy to get it right all the time.
“I think it’ll be a long race. Lewis and Jenson will be very quick in the race. I’m confident, and ready.”
