Red Bull eye 2012 improvements

Red Bull principal Christian Horner admits the competition has caught up with his Formula One team although he insists there are “plenty of things in the pipeline” for 2012 (McLaren 8/11f – Constructors’ Championship 2012 Outright).

Back-to-back world champion Sebastian Vettel, who dominated the glamour motor-sport 12 months ago, could only manage a second-placed finish at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Sunday after splitting the McLarens of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel?s team-mate Mark Webber finished in fourth spot in Melbourne and Horner says ?on a sample of one? this year?s battle for the world drivers? championship and the constructors’ title “looks close”.

But he also told the BBC: “I think our race pace was every bit equal with them.

“Neither of the drivers has been totally happy with their cars here. We know where we need to improve.

“We have plenty of things in the pipeline so we take an awful lot of positives from a podium and a fourth-placed finish.”

Last season Red Bull took the constructors’ title by over 150 points while young German Vettel was 122 points better off Button after 19 races.

The next grand prix in 2012 takes place in Sepang, Malaysia on March 25 (Vettel 9/4f – Malaysian Grand Prix Outright).
