Massa – Fernando needs me

Felipe Massa believes his Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso will need his help if he is to go on and lift the Formula 1 World Championship (Alonso 5/6 – Drivers’ Championship 2012).

Alonso stormed to his third win of the season at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim on Sunday to extend his lead at the top of the Championship to 34 points.

The Spaniard played down his chances of title glory after the race, insisting that the Ferrari was still not the fastest car.

That was something later echoed by team boss Stefano Domenicali, who revealed he intended to make further improvements ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix next week in a bid to compete with Red Bull and McLaren (Alonso – 3/1 to win Hungarian Grand Prix).

Brazilian Massa, who endured a torrid weekend in Germany and eventually finished 12th, has backed his team-mate to go on and lift the championship.

However, he insists that will only be possible with his support, given how close the races have been so far this season.

“Sure, Fernando needs me,” said Massa. “In a championship like this, it is very important to have both cars scoring points.

“This year it is so competitive between many drivers, many teams, so you know how important every result is. It is a championship that maybe one point can be enough to win or lose.”
