Lotus team chairman Gerard Lopez admits fourth place in the constructors’ championship is his aim for the 2012 season, with the battle to win set to be a two-horse race between Red Bull (Evens – Outright) and McLaren (6/4).
Lotus, who were Renault last season, have now unveiled their new car – the E20 – which will be driven by former world champion Kimi Raikkonen and French youngster Romain Grosjean.
The team jettisoned Vitaly Petrov and Bruno Senna at the end of 2011 after finishing in fifth spot in the constructors’ championship and almost 100 points off Mercedes in fourth place.
Lopez said: “We’re trying to bring the car up to the front of the pack. We are trying to aim for fourth as a reasonable goal for this season.”
Raikkonen is back on the grid after two years away from the sport but the 66/1 shot is not expected to repeat his 2007 world title glory when he was with Ferrari and reportedly being paid over $50m a year.
Grosjean , who says he is looking to learn from the veteran Finn, is the reigning GP2 champion who is looking to put a less-than-remarkable spell with Renault in 2009 behind him on his comeback to the big time.
Current world champion Sebastian Vettel is the 5/4 favourite for the world drivers’ championship as the German looks to secure his third crown in a row.
The 24-year-old swept all before him last season but is sure to come under fierce pressure from the likes of McLaren duo Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.
