Hamilton rues McLaren misfortune

Lewis Hamilton has conceded his title hopes are pretty much over and lamented the fact he has not been as ‘lucky’ as Sebastian Vettel during his time at McLaren (Hamilton 100/1, Vettel 1/4 – Drivers’ Championship Outright).

Reigning double world champion Vettel has hit the front in the title race, with four races remaining, on the back of three successive wins, while Hamilton mustered just one point in Korea to see his slim hopes all but end.

Hamilton is fourth in the standings but 62 points behind the Red Bull ace and admits he is now focused on trying to help McLaren claw back the deficit in the Constructors’ Championship (Red Bull 1/10, McLaren 25/1 – Outright).

“Realistically we are too far away, I would say, to win the drivers’ title. If we did through some kind of miracle, then I’ll eat my words,” Hamilton said.

“For the rest of the year now it’s just to try and help the team win the Constructors’ Championship.”

Hamilton burst on to the Formula One scene in 2007 before winning his first title a year later, but he has been unable to finish higher than fourth in any subsequent season.

Vettel has not enjoyed the same sort of success as when he swept all before him on his way to a second successive world crown last season, but he has found consistency when it matters and is closing in on becoming the youngest ever three-time champion.

Hamilton feels fortune has been on the German’s side while hinting that Fernando Alonso would be a more deserving winner this season.

“When I won the World Championship, I wasn’t as lucky as Sebastian has been to have a car that’s as dominant the next year as well,” said the 27-year-old.

Attention turns to India this weekend and Vettel has been installed as the 11/10 favourite to repeat his feat of last year and take the chequered flag, while Hamilton is next best at 5/1 ahead of title challenger Alonso at 11/2.
