Whitmarsh cool on Hamilton contract

McLaren chief Martin Whitmarsh says the team are not concerned about Lewis Hamilton’s contract situation and dropped a big hint the British driver will sign a new, long-term deal soon (Hamilton 4/1 – F1 World Drivers Championship).

Hamilton’s McLaren contract is up at the end of the current season and there has been plenty of speculation that he could decide to move elsewhere with Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull possible destinations for 2013.

However, Whitmarsh says Hamilton’s future is not cause for concern inside the camp and is more of a story for the media than anything else.

He said: “We’ve known Lewis for a long time. We have been concentrating on a season. There has been more speculation, more concern, more interest in this situation in the media than perhaps within the team or within Lewis’s mind.

“We appear nowadays to be often asked questions about it, but I don’t think it occupies as much time in our mind as it does in column inches.”

The 2008 world champion is busy preparing for Sunday’s German Grand Prix and is still in with a chance of the world title as he sits in fourth place in the drivers’ standings, 37 points behind the leader, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso (7/4 to win title) and Whitmarsh says the team are gunning for victory at Hockenheim (Hamilton 11/2 to win race).

He added: “We’re going to the next two races trying to win, as we go to every race.”
