Red Bull the team to beat – Alonso

World championship leader Fernando Alonso believes Red Bull are once again the team to beat this season and admits Ferrari are still playing catch up (Alonso 7/4 Drivers’ title outright).

The Spaniard has easily been the best driver on the Formula 1 circuit this year, getting the best out of his F2012 to head the standings by 13 points heading into this weekend’s German Grand Prix.

The Italian team struggled at the start of the season but a series of brilliant drives by Alonso kept them in contention for silverware before some much-needed updates were introduced.

Ferrari now hope Alonso has the car to match his skill as they go in search of a first Drivers’ Championship since Kimi Raikkonen’s success in 2007.

Despite the upgrades and his current position at the top of the standings, Alonso believes Red Bull have the edge over his team after some dominant displays recently.

Mark Webber won the British Grand Prix two weeks ago, while Sebastian Vettel was on course to win the European GP before his car left him down.

Heading into this weekend’s race at Hockenheim, Vettel is the 5/2 favourite to win on home soil with Alonso 9/2 and Webber 6/1.

Alonso has now called on his team to make sure he stays at the top of the drivers’ standings by putting him on a par with the Red Bulls.

“Red Bull have perhaps been quicker than everybody not just in the last two or three races but ever since Bahrain,” Fernando told Ferrari’s official website.

“They missed pole position in Barcelona and Silverstone but the rest of the poles have all been Red Bull. So they are definitely a bit ahead in terms of performance and we need to catch up.”
