McLaren back Button for Valencia

McLaren sporting director Sam Michael has backed Jenson Button to return to winning form at this weekend’s European Grand Prix (Button 12/1 to win the European Grand Prix).

Button was plagued by gearbox problems and finished a distant 16th in the  Canadian Grand prix, while team-mate Lewis Hamilton recorded a stunning win to regain top spot in the Drivers’ Championship.

The McLaren team have since admitted to having made costly errors ahead of and during races this season which have made life difficult for Button, but sporting director Michael has today reassured the Brits’ supporters that brighter days lie ahead.

“With Jenson in Canada, if you go back to the start of the weekend we had quite a few problems with his gearbox on Friday and he lost a lot of track time because of that,” said Michael.

“From that point on, we tried a few different things with his car set-up to try to explore different areas, and in hindsight we probably shouldn’t have done that”

“There were one or two issues, which we believe we’ve understood and can easily put right for Valencia.”

A win for Button could potentially re-ignite his own title challenge (Button 25/1 to win the Drivers’ Championship) though he has a lot of ground to make up on pace-setter Hamilton and Ferrari rival Fernando Alonso in second.

Alonso finished second at last year’s European Grand Prix, with Red Bull’s Sebastien Vettel taking first place and adding momentum to his charge to the 2011 Drivers’ Championship.

Hamilton and Button finished 3rd and 6th respectively at last year’s race and McLaren will be hoping for a stronger showing this year, as the team looks to turn up the heat on Red Bull, who have so far dominated the Constructors’ Championship.
