Hamilton lands Malaysian pole

Lewis Hamilton (10/11 – Malaysian GP outright) will start from pole in Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix as he bids for a first ever win in Sepang.

The Mercedes star was just 0.055 seconds quicker than Red Bull star and defending world champion Sebastian Vettel, who joins him on the front row.

Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg will start from third as he edged out Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in Saturday’s qualifying.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo completes the top five as Alonso’s team-mate Kimi Raikkonen came in sixth.

Hamilton has never managed to win the Malaysian GP, with his best finish to date second place in his debut season in 2007.

However, the British star has a good record in Sepang regardless as he has never finished outside of the points and managed podium finishes in each of the last two seasons.

Hamilton was delighted to secure pole and is in confident mood ahead of Sunday’s race.

He told reporters: “I’m all over the place at the moment. I’m really happy with how well we’ve done over the weekend, but today was incredible, how heavy was the rain?

“It was tricky out there for everyone because at the end it was almost impossible to see. I couldn’t see where the track went, where the corners were, where to brake. I had to bail out of my final fast lap, so it was very close.

“For myself and for the team, the priority is to bag as many points as possible. We’ve got great a great opportunity, a great car and a team that is performing fantastically right now. Fingers crossed we can see ourselves through to the finish line.”

Both Hamilton and Vettel are seeking their first points of the season as both were forced to retire in the season opener in Australia.

Force India’s Nico Hulkenburg, McLaren’s Kevin Magnussen, Toro Ross’s Jean-Eric Vergne and Magnussen’s team-mate Jenson Button complete the top 10.

Vettel can be backed at 4/1 to win Sunday’s GP, Rosberg is 4/1 and Alonso is 16/1 to take maximum points.
