Hamilton coy on Monaco chances

Lewis Hamilton feels he has a good chance of securing a first race win with new team Mercedes at the Monaco Grand Prix but rejected claims he is the favourite to take maximum points (Lewis Hamilton 6/1 – Monaco GP Winner).

Ferrari star Fernando Alonso has suggested that Mercedes should be considered the favourites for Sunday’s showpiece Grand Prix due to the fact they have secured three consecutive pole positions, with Hamilton taking pole in China and team-mate Nico Rosberg at the front of the grid in Bahrain and Spain.

However, Mercedes have not registered a victory despite their recent dominance in qualifying and Hamilton remains cautious over his chances of securing a first win since his switch from McLaren in the close season.

“It’s a good opportunity,” said Hamilton: “But you never know what the other teams are capable of.

“Mercedes were competitive here last year, and we have better a car this year, so we should be competitive. But the Red Bull, the Lotus and the Ferrari will be massively competitive too, so let’s just wait and see.”

Hamilton won the Monaco GP in his championship-winning season in 2008 but has not managed to secure a podium finish at the Circuit de Monaco since.

Rosberg is 7/1 to win the Monaco GP, while Alonso and championship leader Sebastian Vettel are the 11/4 joint favourites to take maximum points.
