Hamilton feeling confident in Sochi

Lewis HamiltonLewis Hamilton (4/6 fav Russian Grand Prix Outright) admits he is pleased with the performance of his Mercedes after impressing during Friday’s practice at the Russian Grand Prix.

After being beaten by team-mate Nico Rosberg in the earlier session, the championship leader was in a class of his own later on, coming home 0.864 seconds ahead of McLaren’s Kevin Magnussen.

In contrast Rosberg could only manage fourth in the afternoon, although his progress was somewhat hampered after making a mistake in his quick lap to allow Fernando Alonso in ahead of him.

With him currently holding a 10 point lead over the German in the standings, things look good for Hamilton (8/11 fav Russian Grand Prix – Pole Position) going into Saturday’s qualifying and he is certainly full of confidence having won the last three races.

The 2008 world champion admits he is pleased by how his F1 W05 is shaping up in Sochi, although he admits another victory is by no means a formality, especially with the form of the McLarens.

“I think it has been good [day],” the 29-year-old told reporters. “I generally feel comfortable on new circuits – learning them, just growing up that is just a skill you have to learn quite quickly. It is the same for everyone.

“The car has been feeling very good today [too]. The McLarens are very close, which is good for everyone really to be having a race. The track was improving and rubbering in quite a lot. There is a nice flow that you can get on this track. I really enjoyed it.”
