Di Resta – ‘I want a podium finish’

British driver Paul di Resta admits he is desperate to secure a podium finish for the first time in his career, though he believes a valuable opportunity was missed last time out at the Canadian Grand Prix (Di Resta 60/1 to win the European Grand Prix).

Di Resta and his rivals in the Drivers’ Championship head to Valencia this weekend for what could be a critical race in the context of a season that has already produced plenty of unexpected results.

“I want a podium, but at the end of the day if the car is not under you, it’s not under you. We put ourselves in a strong position in Canada and got as high as fifth, but we never took advantage of it,” said di Resta, whose Force India team are yet to record a top three finish this season.

“Of course, everybody in the team is working to achieve a podium finish, but there are a whole lot of things in the background that need to go right.”

Di Resta currently sits 12th in the F1 Drivers’ standings with 21 points, with Force India team owner Vijay Mallya emphasising the importance of improving as the season progresses earlier this week.

Fellow Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg has picked up just seven points this season, meaning the team is well adrift of pace-setters Red Bull in the constructors’ standings (Red Bull 4/5 to win the Constructors’ Championship).

Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado was the fastest in the first practice session ahead of this weekend’s European Grand Prix (Maldonado 33/1 to win the European Grand Prix).
