Button up for Sochi challenge

Jenson ButtonMcLaren’s Jenson Button (100/1 – Race Winner) says he is looking forward to testing out the new Sochi track as the Brit prepares for the first-ever Grand Prix to be held in Russia.

The Autodrom track is shaping up to be a fascinating test for the drivers, with the circuit the only one in the world that is located in an Olympic venue – adding some extra excitement to the occasion.

Button has struggled to compete for the top spots in races this season and that has seen the 2009 world champion to slip down to seventh in the drivers’ championship standings.

The 34-year-old has managed just one podium finish – that coming in the opening weekend at Australia where he clinched third – but since then it has been a tough campaign.

A fourth place at Canada in the seventh race of the season is the next best result achieved, with the Mercedes duo of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton dominating proceedings.

The latter currently sits top of the standings on 266 points after three consecutive wins in Italy, Singapore and Japan, narrowly ahead of team-mate Rosberg who is on 256.

Button has also had to deal with rumours regarding his future at McLaren, as reports continue to link Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso with a move to the team.

The Brit is yet to secure a seat for the 2015 season, just like team-mate Kevin Magnussen, but the former Brawn driver insisted he is more focused on trying out the new Sochi track in Russia.

“It’s always interesting to visit new circuits. It’s fun to get out and explore the contours of the track, the kerbs, the run-offs, the camber,” he said.

“They’re all the things you don’t really fully experience until you’re on-site and able to see the track for the very first time. That’ll be my priority on Thursday.”

Hamilton is the overwhelming favourite to take a fourth successive victory at a price of 4/6, with Rosberg a 9/4 shot.
