Vettel closing in on third title

The Formula 1 season is drawing to a close with only two races to go and Sebastian Vettel goes into this weekend’s US Grand Prix with Fernando Alonso the only driver able to challenge him for the championship. (Vettel 1/5, Alonso 7/2 – World drivers’ championship).

The F1 circus will return to the USA this weekend for the first time since 2007, but at a new track in Austin, Texas, with Vettel already having a reason to celebrate as the race will be his 100th career Grand Prix.

Ferrari ace Alonso made up some ground on the German at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but it would take something special to overturn a ten-point gap over the final two events in order for the Spaniard to clinch the championship.

The last time a race was held in the USA, Lewis Hamilton finished first just ahead of Alonso, but a new track will mean that the history books should go out of the window.

And two-time defending champion Vettel is wary of thinking too far ahead, having said ahead of the action Stateside: “I still believe that the driver who deserves it most will be champion.

“No doubt we are in a very good position now and I hope we do well until the very end to make sure that we deserve the glory.”
