Wolff tips Mercedes duo for battle

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff expects a season-long battle between team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg for the Formula One Drivers’ Championship (Hamilton 1/3 Outright Winner).

Rosberg currently sits at the top of the table, with victory in the opening race of the season in Melbourne and three subsequent runners-up spots behind his British team-mate (Rosberg 11/4 Outright Winner).

Hamilton failed to finish Down Under, but has dominated the last three contests and is just four points behind the German flyer.

The pair seem to be the drivers to beat this year as Mercedes have come to terms with the new engine regulations better than the other teams.

And, as the Brackley-based marque prepare for the Spanish Grand Prix on May 11, Wolff admitted that he cannot wait to see how the season unfolds, with his two drivers going at it for the next six months.

“The very exciting bit for myself and for us is that we see how different they are in their approach but how close the racing pans out on Sunday,” he said.

“It’s always very dangerous to hype one and talk the other down, and this is going to be a constant battle through the season.”

The controversial use of team orders may well rear its head throughout the campaign if the Mercedes duo continue to boss proceedings and Wolff has made it clear that the team should always come first in any Grand Prix.

“Our rule is that the team-mate is not enemy number one but the competition is enemy number one,” he added.
