Button aiming for more understanding

McLaren driver Jenson Button (250/1 World Drivers’ Championship outright) has admitted that the team must get a better understanding of the car as they head into the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.

The 2009 World Champion has endured an inconsistent time so far this season, after managing to claim an impressive third position in the first race of the campaign in Australia the Brit has failed to finish higher than sixth in the standings.

Button has also failed to score any points in the last two races at Bahrain and most recently China, leaving the 34-year-old way down in 8th in the overall leader-board, on just 23 points.

It has been a difficult and testing time for many of the teams this season, with several failing to get to grips after the FIA brought in the new regulations for the 2014 campaign.

Button has admitted that the Spanish Grand Prix will be an important time for the McLaren (100/1 Constructors’ Championship outright) team, but added that they need to get to know the car if they are to challenge for a podium finish.

“For us, it’s not simply about bringing new parts to the circuit: it’s about understanding and unlocking the car’s secrets, and using that understanding to take bigger steps with performance,” he said.

“We’re still at the early stages with our car, and, for us, it’s less about the components that we fit to it, and more about the bigger picture – finding a useful direction, gaining trust in our measurements and pushing ahead.”

McLaren will need a big improvement if they are to overhaul the dominant Mercedes duo of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton after the duo have claimed every race this season between them.

The latter has been particularly impressive though as the Brit has recorded victories in the last three races and the 2008 World Champion is priced at 1/3 to take a second title of his career.
