Vettel refusing to give up

Sebastian VettelRed Bull’s Sebastian Vettel (33/1 German Grand Prix outright) has refused to give up hope of winning the Drivers’ Championship although he has conceded that Mercedes are the favourites with 10 races remaining.

The 27-year-old will head into his home grand prix this weekend without a win as he continues to battle with his car in what has been a turbulent season.

Vettel, who won the last four Drivers’ Championships, has had to watch Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo take victories this season.

The German has admitted that Formula 1 can be a “cruel” sport but he is still dreaming of winning his fifth title.

He is 95 points behind championship leader Rosberg (2/1 German GP outright) and 28 behind teammate Ricciardo but he has refused to stop believing until he cannot catch his rivals.

In an interview with the BBC, he said: “If there is mathematically a chance, there is still a chance.

“If things turn around from this weekend onwards, you’d be stupid not to take the opportunity. So you have to be optimistic.

“Being realistic, though, the gap is very big. Mercedes are in a position to win every race if they want to, so it will be difficult to beat them.

“We are not here to finish third or fifth. If that is the best you can do, you have to be happy with that and respect what other people are doing, but the goal is to win races and fight for the championship.”
