Button needs Valencia result

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh claims Jenson Button needs to put in a good performance in Valencia (10/1 European Grand Prix Race Winner) this weekend and then build on it in the coming races if he is to have a say in the Formula One title race.

The British driver is looking to emulate his 2009 world championship success and started the campaign on a high note with victory in the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

However, Button has fallen away of late with just two points collected from the last four races as he has struggled to adapt to the new Pirelli tyres.

Button (25/1 Formula 1 – World Drivers’ Championship 2012) has dropped to eighth in the standings on 45 points, 43 behind his team-mate Lewis Hamilton, after seven races.

Therefore, while Whitmarsh does not feel Button is already out of the reckoning, he feels a positive result is required in Spain on Sunday.

“I don’t think he needs to win, but I think he needs to be up there and competitive in the next few races,” Whitmarsh told Sky Sports F1.

“This is a Championship where a modest number of grand prix wins could ultimately win – so long as you have consistency behind that modest number of wins.”
