Alonso hoping for Vettel error

Fernando Alonso has admitted he is relying on Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel to slip up in the next two races to keep his Drivers’ Championship dream alive (Vettel 1/5, Alonso 7/2 – Drivers’ Championship betting).

The Spaniard found himself atop the standings for much of the year before Red Bull introduced a series of upgrades for the final seven races which have taken Vettel to another level.

As a result the defending champion has won four of the last five races and finished third in Abu Dhabi two weeks ago, despite starting from the back of the grid in the pit lane.

Heading into this weekend’s United States Grand Prix, Vettel now has a 10 point lead over Alonso and can clinch the title at the Austin circuit.

Should the German driver win in Texas then Alonso would need to be fourth or higher to take the title race to the last Grand Prix of the year in Brazil.

Vettel has admitted he is in a “strong position” but is adamant his Drivers’ Championship battle is far from over.

Ferrari’s Alonso has backed himself and his team to keep fighting until the end but admits he could do with a little help from his opponents if he is to become the youngest driver in F1 history to win three world titles.

“It’s the fifth time I arrive in the last races fighting for the title,” Alonso said. “We have some chances, [but] we need some help from Red Bull.”

“I am very confident. I trust my team and I trust myself and we are honest with ourselves.”

Alonso is 5/1 to win the inaugural race at the Austin circuit, with Vettel 5/4 to continue his storming end to the year.
