Javier Mascherano believes Liverpool (40/1 to win the Premier League outright) must beat Everton in the Merseyside derby to stay in the hunt for a Champions League spot.

The Reds (6/5 to beat Everton in the match betting) have been on a slippery slope recently, winning just one of their last six Premier League matches, a run of results which has seen them seemingly slip out of the title picture.

With their exit from the Champions League confirmed on Tuesday Rafael Benitez will be determined to see his side bounce back with a win against their local rivals.

While Liverpool’s recent form has been bad Everton have been equally as poor, winning one of their last ten matches in all competitions.

Toffees boss David Moyes was left fuming with Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat to Hull, calling it one of the worst performances he had seen in seven years at Goodison Park.

While the last time these two sides meet Everton (12/5 to beat the Reds on Sunday’s UK coupon) dumped Liverpool out of the FA Cup the blue half of Merseyside haven’t seen a league victory over their red neighbours since 2006.

Mascherano says he is keen to keep that run of results going, insisting that Liverpool will be going for all three points when they make the short trip to Goodison.

“The most important thing today is to go to Goodison Park and win there,” said the Argentina international.

“A draw would not be a good result for us. Liverpool have to win. We have to win every game because we’re a top club. We cannot think about going there and being happy with a point.”
